My Thoughts On The Worst Trade In Baseball

The title is a little vague, but my comments are following up on David's article below me. I couldn't believe this trade when I heard it. The Marlins are taking a HUGE risk in giving away what is ultimately their top players. What are they thinking? Actually, I hope they are thinking and have some kind of reasoning behind this? As it is, the Marlins have trouble bringing in attendance and getting fans to come to their games. By giving away their best players for (at the moment) unknown players, they are only going to lose attendance. In no way am I saying that these players can't flourish into all-stars, but the Marlins just gave away possibly their star attractions! Meanwhile, Merry Christmas to the Tigers! Yes, Willis has seen better days, but still, he is such a fired up, charismatic player he should boost the whole ball club and Cabrera is another power threat to add to that lineup of speed and power.

Blockbuster Deal Sends Willis/Cabrera to the Tigers

Yes I wrote that headline correct. In what can only be classified as a mega-deal; the Florida Marlins are sending Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera to the Detroit Tigers. In return the Tigers are going to send Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller, Mike Rabelo, Eulogio De La Cruz, Dallas Trahern, and Burke Badenhop.

Now like most of you reading this, I have no idea who any of those players are. I guess this can only be classified as a great day for the Detroit Tigers. So much has been made about Johan Santana and the teams involved that this really surprised me.

Now I am not convinced that Dontrelle Willis is that great of a pitcher. Cabrera is an amazing hitter, but lacks on defense. The Tigers are going to be a great offensive team and they also have a deep pitching staff. They are going to be a very good team this year and they should be tough to deal with. Willis helps their team on paper, but as stated above I don't think he is that good of a pitcher. I think he is an average pitcher who should get knocked around by the talented teams in the AL.

Whatever the case may be, the Tigers have put themselves in the discussion with the elite teams in the AL. It is going to be hard to get around their lineup now with the addition of Cabrera.

Yankees Won't Deal Their Young Arms

Finally the New York Yankees are doing something right in upper management. Instead of going out and getting a guy with a big bat, they are going to keep their young arms, and look to the future. Here is the story from ESPN.com:

Hank Steinbrenner was clear on what the New York Yankees won't do to get Miguel Cabrera.

"It's pretty obvious which players we're not going to trade," the owner's son said Wednesday, before rattling off the team's most-prized young pitchers. "Chamberlain, Hughes and even Kennedy. Not for a position player."

As the Florida Marlins try to gauge what teams would give them for their All-Star third baseman, the Yankees are showing qualified interest. Yes, they'd love Cabrera to replace Alex Rodriguez, but they're prepared to wait for the asking price to go down. For now, when other teams inquire, Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy aren't available.
