#2 LSU Upsets #1 OSU 38-24 And Wins The Allstate BCS Championship Game.

First, I'm impressed by Ohio State's running attack. Chris Wells' 65 yard rush for a touchdown to start off the game was amazing. Unfortunately for Ohio State, this is the only highlight worth mentioning.

LSU entered this game as the first two-loss team to play in a BCS title game. That's not a good thing. The Tigers are here because they hit the BCS lotto: They squeezed past Tennessee in the SEC championship, Oklahoma beat then-No. 1 Missouri in the Big 12 championship and Pittsburgh upset then-No. 2 West Virginia in Morgantown.

LSU (11-2) was trying to win its second BCS title in five seasons, on the very same Superdome where the last one came. The Tigers, who defeated Oklahoma in the 2004 title game but had to share the championship with Southern Cal, were looking to win one that no one could dispute

With much less star power, Ohio State made it to the championship game for the second year in a row, this time as an underdog despite the No. 1 ranking.

This game was all about Louisiana State. They came into this game being favored to win by 3 1/2 points and after getting off to a painfully slow start in which they were down by 10, LSU's trick plays and receivers taking advantage of blown coverage put them on a scoring rampage. No. 2 LSU danced, dodged and darted its way into the end zone Monday night, turning the BCS national championship game into a horrible replay for No. 1 Ohio State. It was over early, with Matt Flynn throwing four touchdown passes in a 38-24 win..

After falling behind 10-0 in the early going, LSU responded with 24 unanswered points to take a halftime lead.

Matt Flynn was absolutely incredible, throwing for 174 yards and 4 touchdowns. His only mistake was giving up 1 interception, which allowed a glimmer of hope for OSU. However, that hope was quickly taken away as LSU added more points on the scoreboard. Matt Flynn won the offensive MVP of the game with a career high 4 touchdown tosses. What perfect timing to throw for a career high in touchdowns in one game than the BCS game.

Why was Ohio State ranked #1 when America's vote and the spread clearly favored LSU. I have no idea, but OSU didn't play like a #1 seed this game. This is the second year in a row that OSU has been defeated badly in the BCS Championship game and I can bet they won't be appearing in the BCS Bowl game anytime soon. In a season of surprises, this was hardly an upset: Ohio State once again fell apart in college football's biggest game. A year after the Buckeyes were routed by Tim Tebow and Florida 41-14 in the Arizona desert, they barely did better.

You have to admire OSU's persistence however. They played the game out all the way to the end, rushing for a touchdown with 1:13 left in the 4th quarter. They wanted to make the score at least look respectable.

Yet while LSU got to hoist the $30,000 crystal trophy, certainly many fans around the country were peering into their crystal balls, wondering if someone else was worthy of the title. Southern California, Georgia, West Virginia, Kansas and Missouri all put on impressive shows in bowl games, and will be among the favorites in 2008.

LSU became just the fourth favorite to win in 10 BCS championship games. Coach Les Miles probably got a little extra satisfaction, too. Though he turned down a chance to return home to Michigan, he did something his alma mater hasn't done recently -- beat the Buckeyes.

The loss left Ohio State at 0-9 overall in bowl games against teams from the Southeastern Conference. The SEC delights in whipping Big Ten teams in what's become a rivalry that steams up fans on both sides.

So Much For Hawaii's Undefeated Season

I finally took the time to watch a college bowl game this year (well technically its a new year now so the year is young). Too bad I picked the game that turned out to be a major disappointment. After going undefeated during the regular season, Hawaii got smacked by Georgia 41-10 in the All State Sugar Bowl. Perhaps this gives credit to those in charge of the BCS Standings who didn't give much love to Hawaii despite going undefeated because they played easy teams. Many thought if they were pit against a very good team, they would get embarrassed. This theory was proven Tuesday night.

Overpowering the country's last unbeaten team, black-clad Georgia took out its frustration at getting passed over for a shot at the BCS championship with a 41-10 rout of Colt Brennan and the Warriors on Tuesday night.

Next Monday, on the very same Superdome field, Ohio State will meet LSU in the national title game. The No. 4 Bulldogs feel they're as deserving as either of those teams, and they'll certainly get no argument from Hawaii, which came to the Big Easy with a perfect record and left all beaten up.

"We're No. 1," Georgia safety Kelin Johnson proclaimed. "We're supposed to be in the national championship game. The nation knows it, everyone knows it."

Added linebacker Marcus Washington as he celebrated on the field: "We're the best in the land. We should be playing next week."

Georgia (11-2) established itself as a leading contender in 2008 with a total whippin' of the 10th-ranked Warriors (12-1), who cracked the BCS with an unbeaten run through the Western Athletic Conference, then fell flat in their biggest game ever.

When a powerful offense meets a powerful defense, traditionally the cliche "defense wins championships" is used. That cliche certainly applies here. Knowshon Moreno ran for a pair of touchdowns in the opening quarter and the Bulldogs' defense made life miserable for Brennan, a Heisman Trophy finalist and catalyst for the nation's highest-scoring team. He was sacked eight times, threw three interceptions and lost two fumbles, one of them recovered for a Georgia touchdown.

After getting slammed to the Superdome turf one last time by Geno Atkins, Brennan staggered to the sideline, his night mercifully done. The junior had the worst showing of his career in a game played to the finish, going 22-of-38 for just 169 yards, less than half of his 348-yard average this season.

"This is not how I wanted my career to end," the senior said.

Heisman winners don't usually fair well in bowl games. The most notable example I can remember is Vince Young's upset victory over Matt Leinart. However, now look at these two players in the NFL. One is struggling to keep his team in contention and the other became injured and out for the season.

Number 1 Seed Missouri And Number 2 Seed West Virginia Both Lose

In an already crazy season of improbable twists and turns, now this: No. 2 West Virginia is done in by unranked Pittsburgh, and No. 1 Missouri is blown away by Oklahoma. Taken from ESPN:

Rich Rodriguez could barely get the words out. He paused. He shook his head. He looked down at the table in front of him, as if searching for a way to describe how West Virginia let its chance at a national title slip away.

Eventually the Mountaineers' coach came up with this.

"It was just a nightmare," he said. "The whole thing was a nightmare."

In a season defined by upsets, the second-ranked Mountaineers became the latest to be felled by the curse of No. 2, falling to their fierce rival Pittsburgh 13-9 Saturday night.

A win away from playing for the national championship, the Mountaineers (10-2, 5-2 Big East) were expected to roll over rival Pittsburgh (5-7, 3-4) in the 100th Brackyard Brawl on their way to New Orleans for the Bowl Championship Series title game.

No way. Not in this unpredictable season, when nothing has gone according to plan and upsets have become so frequent the word itself has almost lost its meaning.

Pitt, which had lost four of the last five to West Virginia and allowed 45 points to the Mountaineers in each of the last two games in the series, celebrated the biggest victory of coach Dave Wannstedt's three lackluster seasons.

Meanwhile, bad news dawned on another team....

The top-ranked Tigers' BCS dreams died Saturday night at the hands -- and feet -- of the Sooners in the Big 12 title game.

No. 9 Oklahoma, a regular at Big 12 titles, showed Missouri what it takes to win one: defense and a bruising running game near the goal line.

Oklahoma rushed for three touchdowns, quarterback Sam Bradford threw for two more and the Sooners coolly captured their fifth Big 12 championship since 2000, upending the upstart Tigers 38-17 Saturday night in the Alamodome.

The Sooners are the first team in Big 12 history to win consecutive titles.

"It's an unbelievable feeling," Oklahoma redshirt freshman quarterback Sam Bradford said after his teammates hoisted their trophy. "It feels amazing."

Now that the Tigers are out of the Bowl Championship Series title game, the question is "Who's in?"

With No. 1 Missouri (11-2) and No. 2 West Virginia both losing Saturday, No. 3 Ohio State gets a boost into the Jan. 7 title game in New Orleans. Sunday's BCS rankings will decide what opponent gets an unexpected chance to play for the national championship.

My vote for the BCS bowl game....bring back the Ducks! Have them play Hawaii. Ohio State already had their shot for the #1 spot and blew it. I mean, c'mon Hawaii is undefeated! Why shouldn't they be in the championship game?

While the nation waits to see who gets into the overall championship game, I want to propose a simple idea I'm sure many have thought about already that would make this whole situation easier. Why not use a playoff system like they do in basketball to determine ONE championship game instead of having all these mini-bowls? Its unfair how a team can go unbeaten the whole season and still be ranked 11 and not be in the BCS bowl. I understand that strength of schedule has a lot to do with it, but still, a win is a win. That's like saying if the Patriots go undefeated this season, they should be ranked 5th because they played teams like the Jets, Bills, and Dolphins.

Florida State upsets #2 Boston College 27-17

Taken from ESPN

Geno Hayes returned Matt Ryan's third interception for a 38-yard touchdown with 1:10 to play on Saturday night to help Florida State beat second-ranked Boston College 27-17, ending the Eagles' run at an unbeaten season and shaking up the BCS standings yet again.

With the loss by BC (8-1, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), only Ohio State, Kansas and Hawaii remain unbeaten. A handful of one-loss teams -- LSU, Oregon and Oklahoma among them -- had their hopes for reaching the Bowl Championship Series title game aided by Florida State. LSU will probably take second-place behind Ohio State in the BCS standings when they come out Sunday.

The No. 2 team in The Associated Press Top 25 lost three consecutive weeks before Boston College took over the second spot on Oct. 21 and held on with a comeback victory over Virginia Tech last week. Southern California, California and South Florida were the others to lose as No. 2.

Ryan finished 25-for-53 for two touchdowns and 415 yards -- his fourth career 400-yard game, tying Doug Flutie for the most in school history.

Comments:
This has become a theme in College Football this season. There have been some many upsets that it is hard to keep track. Now the question becomes who will be #2 next week? Some people say it should be LSU, while others say it should be Oregon. I think it should be Oregon. They just beat Arizona State handing them their first loss of the season. It was a win over a top 5 team, and a win that should propel them to #2 in the rankings.
