A Deadly Shooting Cancels Northern Illinois' Weekend Events

Northern Illinois officials canceled all of this weekend's athletics events, including two home Mid-American Conference basketball games, after Thursday's deadly shooting rampage at the DeKalb campus.

Huskie director of athletics Dr. Jim Phillips announced Thursday that the university called off all of its weekend's sporting events -- both home and away.

The shooting at Northern Illinois killed five students and injured more than a dozen others. The gunman opened fire with a shotgun and two handguns from the stage of a lecture hall. Damn, he meant business.

The university president says the gunman fatally shot four women and a man. Authorities say the gunman, a former grad student, committed suicide.

The cancellations involve two home baskeball games in the NIU Convocation Center -- a women's basketball game against Ohio University scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. ET and a men's basketball game against Western Michigan on Sunday at 3 p.m. In addition, NIU's women's track and field, women's gymnastics, men's and women's tennis, wrestling and men's golf teams will not travel to away competitions this weekend.
